Ha Long’s tourist boats not required to paint in white entirely

Over 500 tourist boats in Ha Long Bay in the northern province of Quang Ninh will not have to be painted entirely in white, said the province’s Vice Chairwoman Vu Thi Thu Thuy.

Thuy said that these boats only need to be painted with white patterns to make them outstanding in the sea.

The official said that the changing of paint color for tourist boats is needed to raise service quality and make a facelift for the Ha Long Bay, a world natural heritage.

She confirmed that the local authorities do not aim to force all boats to where “white uniform” so they do not fix the compulsory rate of white color for boats. Boat owners are allowed to apply their own creativeness on their boats.

Doan Van Dung, head of the Ha Long tourist boat team, said that the new decision has helped solve difficulties for boat owners because they would not have pay thousands of US dollars to re-paint their vehicles. Adding white patterns is much simpler and not very costly.

“Under the new decision, brown will be still the major colors of boats. We will only add white patterns on our vehicles,” Dung said.

Dung said that the color of Ha Long tourist boats is the image of the tourism sector so every change must be considered very carefully. To build up a brand for Ha Long tourist boat, state agencies should take into account how much percentage of boats are in brown and how much percentage are in white color.

Some transport firms have painted white patterns on their boats, such as the Tuan Chau, Ha Long, Bhaya and Bao Ngoc companies.

Over 500 tourist boats will have to be painted with white patterns before April 30.

Earlier, the local governments asked all tourist boats to be painted entirely in white color before April 30, 2012. Those which are not repainted will be not licensed to operate in the bay.
